What the Wonderlic-style cognitive ability test tests in Clerical Speed and Accuracy

  • Comparing pairs (how many are exactly alike)
  • Exact matching of codes, phone numbers, names and addresses
  • Data verification (spot the field with an error; check line totals)
  • Alphabetical filing (words; last name then first name)
  • Counting and checking (count a digit; find the repeated entry)
  • Coding with a key; number ordering

High-yield clerical speed and accuracy facts

  • Compare in 3–4 character chunks (or one dash-separated block at a time). Drop a choice as soon as one chunk differs.
  • 'How many pairs are exactly alike?' Count the pairs that differ, then subtract from the total number of pairs.
  • Copied records: compare field by field (name, then ID, then phone, then address), not whole line against whole line.
  • Exact match means every character: spaces, punctuation, abbreviations (St. vs Street, Ave vs Av), capitalization and suffixes (Jr.) all count.
  • Filing: compare letter by letter and stop at the first letter that differs. Carlsen comes before Carlson (e < o at the 6th letter).
  • Nothing before something: a shorter name that is the start of a longer one files first (Lee before Leeds; Ann before Anne).

Common clerical speed and accuracy traps

  • Counting matches instead of differences and losing track.
  • Missing a transposed pair (4417 vs 4471) when skimming.
  • Missing a doubled or dropped letter (Mitchel vs Mitchell).
  • Treating 'St.' and 'Street' or 'Jr.' and 'Sr.' as exact matches.
  • Filing by first name when last names differ.
  • Filing a longer name ahead of its shorter prefix (Leeds before Lee).
  • Ordering numbers by first digit only (450 before 98).
  • Accepting a line total because it looks right without checking quantity × the cents.

Question 1

Which order line has a wrong total? 3 x $4.20 = $12.60 8 x $1.60 = $12.80 3 x $3.40 = $10.20 5 x $6.90 = $34.50

  1. A3 x $4.20
  2. B8 x $1.60
  3. C3 x $3.40
  4. D5 x $6.90
  5. EAll lines are correct
Show answer and explanation

Answer: E. Every line multiplies out exactly.

Why not A: 3 x $4.20 = $12.60, which matches.

Why not B: 8 x $1.60 = $12.80, which matches.

Why not C: 3 x $3.40 = $10.20, which matches.

Why not D: 5 x $6.90 = $34.50, which matches.

Remember: Split each price into dollars and cents and multiply both parts (3 x $4.20 = 3 x $4 + 3 x 20¢ = $12.60); stop at the first line that doesn't match.

Question 2

Which ZIP code appears twice in this list? 82663, 82668, 83663, 32663, 82663, 82636

  1. A83663
  2. B82663
  3. C82668
  4. D82636
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. 82663 is listed twice.

Why not A: 83663 appears only once.

Why not C: 82668 appears only once.

Why not D: 82636 appears only once.

Remember: Take each choice and scan the list for it, stopping as soon as you find a second copy; the look-alikes differ by one swapped or changed digit.

Question 3

Which choice is exactly the same as: (629) 398-4594

  1. A(629) 98-4594
  2. B(692) 398-4594
  3. C(629) 38-4594
  4. D(629) 398-4594
Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. Every character matches.

Why not A: Not a match: the "3" is missing.

Why not B: Not a match: "29" is swapped to "92".

Why not C: Not a match: the "9" is missing.

Remember: Compare one chunk at a time (between the dashes or spaces) and drop a choice at its first mismatch.

Question 4

Key: A=2 E=4 N=5 O=3 R=9 S=8 T=7 Which word is coded as 4287?

  1. AEAST
  2. BTEAS
  3. CSEAT
  4. DEATS
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. 4=E, 2=A, 8=S, 7=T spells EAST.

Why not B: TEAS would be coded 7428, not 4287.

Why not C: SEAT would be coded 8427, not 4287.

Why not D: EATS would be coded 4278, not 4287.

Remember: Decode from the left one digit at a time and drop each choice at its first wrong letter; the survivor is the answer.

  5. E6
Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. 3 appears 4 times: 2724 (0), 8232 (1), 6423 (1), 2933 (2).

Why not A: Too few: at least one 3 was missed; recheck each group.

Why not B: Too few: at least one 3 was missed; recheck each group.

Why not D: Too many: a different digit was counted, or one 3 was counted twice.

Why not E: Too many: a different digit was counted, or one 3 was counted twice.
