What the ATI TEAS 7 exam tests in Mathematics

  • Numbers and algebra (18 of 34 scored items): converting fractions, decimals and percents; operations with rational numbers and order of operations; comparing and ordering numbers; one-variable equations and inequalities; translating words into expressions and equations; percent, discount, tax and tip problems; ratios, proportions and unit rates; estimation and rounding
  • Measurement and data (16 of 34 scored items): interpreting tables, graphs and charts; mean, median, mode and range; relationships between variables; perimeter, area, volume and the Pythagorean theorem; metric and US customary conversions; temperature conversion

High-yield mathematics facts

  • Fraction to decimal: top ÷ bottom. Decimal to percent: × 100 (0.375 = 37.5%). Percent to decimal: ÷ 100 (6.5% = 0.065).
  • Mixed number to improper fraction: 2 3/4 = 11/4.
  • Order of operations: parentheses, exponents, then × and ÷ left to right, then + and − left to right.
  • Signs: subtracting a negative = adding. Negative × negative = positive. An odd number of negative factors gives a negative product.
  • Dividing by a fraction = multiplying by its reciprocal. Absolute value = distance from 0.
  • Ordering numbers: convert all to decimals and compare place by place (0.50 > 0.45). With negatives, the number farther from 0 is smaller (−0.8 < −0.25).

Common mathematics traps

  • Percent change computed on the new value instead of the original.
  • Adding successive discounts (20% + 10% is not 30%).
  • Writing 5 − 2n for '5 less than twice n'.
  • Forgetting to flip the inequality after multiplying or dividing by a negative.
  • Finding the median without ordering the data first.
  • Using the mean when an outlier makes the median the better measure.
  • Radius vs diameter; area vs perimeter.
  • Square units for area vs cubic units for volume.

Question 1

Which fraction lies strictly between 2/5 and 1/2?

  1. A3/7
  2. B3/8
  3. C4/10
  4. D5/9
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. 2/5 = 0.4 and 1/2 = 0.5, and 3/7 ≈ 0.429, which falls between them.

Why not B: 3/8 = 0.375, which is less than 0.4, so it lies below 2/5.

Why not C: 4/10 simplifies to 2/5 = 0.4. It equals the lower bound, so it is not strictly between the two fractions.

Why not D: 5/9 ≈ 0.556, which is greater than 0.5, so it lies above 1/2.

Remember: Convert every fraction to a decimal to see where it falls in relation to the given bounds.

Question 2

Read the following inventory of tubing rolls in a school science lab. Roll | Length of tubing A | 3.5 meters B | 275 centimeters C | 1,800 millimeters What is the total length of tubing on all three rolls, in meters?

  1. A2,078.5 meters
  2. B8.05 meters
  3. C24.25 meters
  4. D32.8 meters
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. 275 cm ÷ 100 = 2.75 m and 1,800 mm ÷ 1,000 = 1.8 m. Total: 3.5 + 2.75 + 1.8 = 8.05 m.

Why not A: This adds the three numbers without converting centimeters and millimeters to meters.

Why not C: This divides 1,800 mm by 100 instead of 1,000, giving 18 m for Roll C.

Why not D: This divides 275 cm by 10 instead of 100, giving 27.5 m for Roll B.

Remember: Convert every measurement to the same unit before adding: 100 cm = 1 m and 1,000 mm = 1 m.

Question 3

Read the following information from a community swim center. The Harbor Point Aquatic Center has two pools. Pool | Length of one lap (one length) Lap pool | 25 yards Competition pool | 50 meters Use 1 yard = 0.9144 meter. A swimmer wants to swim at least 1,000 yards using only full lengths of the competition pool. What is the fewest number of full lengths she must swim?

  1. A18
  2. B22
  3. C19
  4. D20
Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. 1,000 yd × 0.9144 = 914.4 m, and 914.4 ÷ 50 = 18.288 lengths. Eighteen lengths fall short, so she needs 19.

Why not A: This rounds 18.288 down. Eighteen lengths cover only 900 m, which is less than 914.4 m, so 18 does not meet the 1,000-yard goal.

Why not B: This divides 1,000 by 0.9144 to get about 1,093.6, which converts in the wrong direction. Dividing that by 50 and rounding up gives 22.

Why not D: This treats 1,000 yards as if it were 1,000 meters (1,000 ÷ 50 = 20). The units were never converted.

Remember: When a result must reach at least a target, round any fractional count up, not to the nearest whole number.

Question 4

Use the following stem-and-leaf plot of wait times, in minutes, recorded for 12 customers at a pharmacy counter. Stem | Leaf 1 | 2 5 8 2 | 0 4 4 4 7 3 | 1 3 6 6 Key: 2 | 4 = 24 minutes What is the mean wait time, in minutes? Round to the nearest tenth if necessary.

  1. A100.0
  2. B24.0
  3. C27.3
  4. D25.0
Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. Values: 12, 15, 18, 20, 24, 24, 24, 27, 31, 33, 36, 36. Sum = 45 + 119 + 136 = 300; 300 ÷ 12 = 25.0.

Why not A: This divides the sum by the 3 stems instead of by the 12 data values.

Why not B: 24 is the median (average of the 6th and 7th values, 24 and 24) and also the mode, not the mean.

Why not C: This divides 300 by 11, as if one value were missed when counting; there are 12 leaves, so 12 values.

Remember: Each leaf is one data value, so the count for the mean is the number of leaves, not the number of stems.

Question 5

Four clinics reported the share of appointments that were missed: Clinic P, 3/7; Clinic Q, 0.42; Clinic R, 43%; Clinic S, 5/12. Which clinic had the greatest share of missed appointments?

  1. AClinic R (43%)
  2. BClinic P (3/7)
  3. CClinic S (5/12)
  4. DClinic Q (0.42)
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. Converted to decimals: 3/7 ≈ 0.4286, 0.42, 43% = 0.43, and 5/12 ≈ 0.4167. The largest value is 0.43.

Why not B: 3/7 ≈ 0.4286, which is just below 0.43. You have to convert to at least three decimal places to see that it is smaller.

Why not C: 5/12 ≈ 0.4167, the smallest of the four values. Its larger denominator does not make it larger.

Why not D: 0.42 is less than both 0.43 and 0.4286. Choosing it suggests the forms were compared without converting them.

Remember: To compare numbers in mixed forms, convert all of them to decimals and carry enough places to break close ties.
