2026 · From official Alabama State Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Alabama: registration, training and costs
To work as a pharmacy technician in Alabama you need a pharmacy technician registration from the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy before you do any pharmacy work, and you always work under a pharmacist's direct supervision. There's no separate trainee registration in the board's rules: you register first, then complete a board-approved training program within six months, and passing the PTCB or NHA certification exam counts as that training. National certification isn't required to register, though a pharmacist can supervise more technicians when some of them are certified. You must be at least 17, and neither the board's rule nor the statute sets a diploma or GED requirement. Every applicant goes through a board-approved criminal background check, and you apply online through the board's Gateway for $100: a $60 application fee plus $40 for the background check. Registrations expire December 31 of odd-numbered years and renew for $60, with 6 hours of continuing education each cycle, 2 of them live. These requirements come from the board's technician page and fee schedule, section 34-23-131 of the Code of Alabama and the board's rules in chapter 680-X-2, checked November 1, 2026.

Renewal and continuing education
Every technician registration expires December 31 of odd-numbered years, whenever it was issued; the next deadline is December 31, 2027. You renew through Gateway between October 1 and December 31 for $60, and the renewal counts only once payment is received and the board approves it. Each cycle needs 6 hours of continuing education, at least 2 of them live (in person or live virtual, not pre-recorded), from ACPE-accredited or board-approved providers, finished by December 31 of the renewal year; you may renew before you finish it. For your first renewal, you need 3 hours (1 live) if you were registered for one full calendar year and none if less, so a technician first registered in 2026 needs 3 hours for the 2027 renewal. Keep proof of CE for 2 years, since the board audits at random. A registration not renewed by December 31 becomes void; reinstating it costs a $5 late fee per lapsed month plus lapsed fees, a new background check, and 3 hours of CE (1 live) for each year it was expired, up to 15 hours. source
