2026 · From official Texas State Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked October 31, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Texas: trainee registration, certification and costs

To work as a pharmacy technician in Texas you need a registration from the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, and there are two kinds. If you aren't certified yet, you register as a pharmacy technician trainee ($55), which lets you train and work under a pharmacist for up to two years; it can be held only once and can't be renewed. To become a registered pharmacy technician (Ph.T.R., $88), you must pass a board-approved national certification exam, such as the PTCB's PTCE, and hold a current certificate. Both registrations need a high school diploma or GED (or be working toward one) and fingerprints for a criminal history check. Training is on the job, from a training manual set by the pharmacist-in-charge, with no minimum hours in the rules. The registration renews every two years for $85, with 20 hours of continuing education, including 1 hour of Texas pharmacy law and the human trafficking prevention course. These requirements come from the board's rules in 22 Texas Administrative Code chapter 297, checked October 31, 2026.

Renewal and continuing education

The technician registration renews every two years and expires on the last day of your assigned expiration month. Each renewal needs 20 contact hours of continuing education, including at least 1 hour of Texas pharmacy law or rules and the human trafficking prevention course; no more than 5 hours can come from in-service training at work. You don't need CE for your first registration period, and passing a certification exam during the period counts as all 20 hours. Since September 1, 2026, CE has to be reported through the board's CE tracking system before you renew. If your registration has been expired for more than a year, you apply again from the start. Trainee registrations can't be renewed and need no CE. source
