2026 · From official Missouri Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Missouri: registration, fingerprints and costs

To work as a pharmacy technician in Missouri you need a pharmacy technician registration from the Missouri Board of Pharmacy; state law makes it the only way to assist a pharmacist. There's no separate trainee category, and you can start working as soon as you've submitted a completed application with the fee, your photo and a fingerprint receipt, while the board processes it. National certification isn't required to register, but you need an active certification from a body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, such as PTCB or NHA, for some duties, including giving vaccines or administering medication, which also take at least a year of technician experience. State law sets no diploma or training requirement and no specific minimum age: applicants must be at least legal working age, and technicians work to their employer's written standards. Every applicant is fingerprinted through the state's vendor, IdentoGO, and pays that fee ($47 on the board's forms page, subject to change) separately from the board's $40 application fee, and applications go through the MOPRO online portal. Registrations expire every May 31 and renew for $40 a year, and no continuing education is required. These requirements come from section 338.013 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri, the board's rules in 20 CSR 2220 and its 2025 technician guide and application, checked November 1, 2026.

Board fees are nonrefundable, even if the board denies the registration, and the board's fee rule sets no technician late fee. National certification is optional for registration; if you take the PTCE anyway, PTCB charges $129.

Renewal and continuing education

Registrations are valid for one year and expire on May 31. Renewal notices go to the email address the board has on file (in 2026 they went out March 1), and you renew online through MOPRO for $40 by 11:59 p.m. on May 31. Missouri doesn't require continuing education to renew a technician registration, though a national certification you hold has its own CE. You can't work after May 31 until you've renewed or submitted a new application, and under the statute an unrenewed registration becomes void 30 days after it expires. source

Mistakes people make in Missouri

  • The MACHS registration confirmation page isn't a fingerprint receipt. You need proof of payment from IdentoGO, and a receipt dated more than 90 days before you apply means getting fingerprinted again. source
  • Every registration expires on May 31, every year. If you haven't renewed by then, you have to stop working until you do. source
  • A controlled substance conviction can keep you from working even if the board registers you: you need a waiver from the Missouri Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs for any such conviction, and from the DEA for a felony. Answer "yes" to the criminal history questions even if you received a suspended imposition of sentence. source

Taking the PTCE anyway? Here's what's on it

The PTCB's certification exam, the PTCE, has 90 questions (80 scored) in 1 hour 50 minutes and costs $129. On the 2026 content outline, Medications is 35% of the exam, Patient Safety and Quality Assurance 23.75%, Order Entry and Processing 22.5%, and Federal Requirements 18.75%.
