2026 · From official Virginia Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Virginia: registration, training and costs
To work as a pharmacy technician in Virginia you need a pharmacy technician registration from the Virginia Board of Pharmacy; nobody may do a technician's duties without one. While you are enrolled in a training program you can work as a registered pharmacy technician trainee ($30), directly monitored by a pharmacist, for up to two years and only while you are actively progressing in the program. To register as a technician ($40) you must complete a qualifying training program (accredited, recognized by PTCB or NHA, or run by a federal agency or the military) and pass the PTCB or NHA national certification exam, so the exam is required before you register. The law and the board's rules set no minimum age or high school diploma requirement, and they don't list fingerprints or a background check among the registration requirements. You apply online through the Department of Health Professions, and the application needs an NABP e-profile number. The registration renews every year by December 31 for $45, with 5 contact hours of approved continuing education each calendar year and no carryover. These requirements come from section 54.1-3321 of the Code of Virginia, the board's rules in 18VAC110-21 and the board's FAQ, checked November 1, 2026.

Renewal and continuing education
Registrations expire on December 31 and renew every year; if you're first registered on or after July 1, your first renewal is due December 31 of the following year. Each renewal needs 5 contact hours (0.5 CEUs) of approved continuing education earned in that calendar year, with no carryover, even if you aren't working as a technician. Up to 1 hour can come from volunteer technician work at a local health department or free clinic, and you keep your CE records for two years after the renewal. There is no inactive status. Within a year of expiring you can renew with a $15 late fee; after that you apply for reinstatement. After five years, the rules require passing a PTCB or NHA exam again (unless your certification is current) and 20 hours of CE, and the board's FAQ also asks for a new training program. source
Mistakes people make in Virginia
- There is no grace period for new hires. If you'll do technician duties while in a training program, you need a trainee registration first. source
- Passing the PTCE alone isn't enough. You also need a qualifying training program; the rules make exceptions only for some people who trained or passed the exam before July 1, 2022, and for technicians who practiced in another state. source
- CE is due every calendar year, not every two years: 5 hours, dated January 1 to December 31 of the year you renew for, with no carryover. source
