2026 · From official Arizona State Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Arizona: trainee registration, license and costs
To work as a pharmacy technician in Arizona you need a pharmacy technician license from the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy, or a pharmacy technician trainee registration while you train. The trainee registration costs $25, is applied for online, has no education or exam requirement (you must be at least 18 and send proof of lawful presence and a photo ID), and lasts 36 months; it can't be renewed or issued again. For the technician license you must be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete the training program the board's rules call for (run by your pharmacy to prepare you for a national certification exam), and pass the PTCB's PTCE or NHA's ExCPT. You also need an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card from the Department of Public Safety, and the license application costs $82. The license renews every two years by November 1 of your assigned year for $72, with 20 hours of continuing education, including 3 hours on opioids, substance use disorder or addiction, and no CE is due before your first renewal. These requirements come from the board's pages and application instructions, Arizona Revised Statutes 32-1923.01 to 32-1925 and the board's rules in 4 A.A.C. 23, checked November 1, 2026.

What it costs in Arizona
| Fee | Amount | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Pharmacy technician trainee registration (36 months, not renewable) | $25 | Arizona State Board of Pharmacy source |
| PTCE certification exam | $129 | PTCB source |
| Pharmacy technician license application | $82 | Arizona State Board of Pharmacy source |
| Renewal, every 2 years | $72 | Arizona State Board of Pharmacy source |
| Late renewal penalty | Half the renewal fee ($36) | Arizona State Board of Pharmacy source |
| Reinstatement after 5 or more years delinquent | $216 | Arizona State Board of Pharmacy source |
The $82 license fee is the $72 licensure fee plus the $10 wall license fee in the board's rules. The fingerprint clearance card comes from the Department of Public Safety, not the board, and if you take NHA's ExCPT instead of the PTCE, NHA sets that fee.
Renewal and continuing education
The license renews every two years: the board assigns each technician to an even-year or odd-year group, and renewal is due on or before November 1 of that year, online through your board profile. You can't apply more than 60 days before the license expires. The fee is $72, and each renewal needs 20 hours of continuing education from approved providers, including 3 hours on opioids, substance use disorder or addiction. Technicians who give vaccines need 2 of the 20 hours on vaccine administration, and technicians at remote dispensing site pharmacies need 2 more hours on that practice. No CE is needed between your first license and your first renewal, and you keep CE records for five years. If the fee isn't paid by November 1 the license is suspended, and a late renewal carries a penalty of half the renewal fee. If you miss more than one cycle you renew on paper, and after five or more years delinquent you apply for reinstatement. Trainee registrations can't be renewed. source
Mistakes people make in Arizona
- The trainee registration can't be renewed or issued again. If it expires before you pass the exam and get licensed, you can't register as a trainee a second time. source
- An unofficial score report isn't accepted as proof of passing. Send your PTCB certificate, wallet card or PTCB passing letter; an ExCPT counts only if you passed it on or after November 16, 2016. source
- The license application needs a valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card, which you get from the Department of Public Safety, not the board. Plan for it before you apply. source
