2026 · From official Georgia Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Georgia: registration, background check and costs

To work as a pharmacy technician in Georgia you need a pharmacy technician registration from the Georgia Board of Pharmacy, because pharmacies may only use registered technicians for technician duties. There's no separate trainee registration; the board says everyone doing technician work in a pharmacy, including students from technician programs, must be registered. National certification isn't required, although a pharmacist supervising three technicians at once needs at least one of them certified, and two of four. You must be at least 17 and be enrolled in high school or have a diploma, GED or college education, and you pay for a fingerprint background check through IdentoGO. The board's technician rules set no required course or training hours, and you apply online for $100, then mail a notarized supplement packet. Registrations expire on June 30 of odd-numbered years and renew for $60, with 20 hours of continuing education per two-year cycle, although the board has proposed dropping that CE requirement at a hearing on November 18, 2026. These requirements come from the board's rules (chapter 480-15), fee schedule, forms and technician FAQs, checked November 1, 2026.

Renewal and continuing education

Registrations expire on June 30 of each odd-numbered year (the next is June 30, 2027) and can be renewed online for $60; a late renewal costs $90. If you haven't renewed and paid before September 1 of that year, the registration lapses and can't be renewed: you apply for a new registration, on a paper application from the board. Since July 1, 2023 each renewal needs 20 hours of board-approved continuing education within the two-year cycle (10 hours if you registered in the cycle's middle year, none if you registered in its last six months), plus 2 hours on immunizations if you give vaccines, and hours can't be carried over. On October 19, 2026 the board proposed removing the 20-hour requirement (the vaccine hours would stay), with a hearing and vote set for November 18, 2026, so check the rule before the 2027 renewal. source

Mistakes people make in Georgia

  • Don't mail the supplement packet before you've submitted the online application and paid the fee; the board says to send it only after. source
  • A registration from another state doesn't transfer. Georgia law and board rules don't allow reciprocity for pharmacy technicians, so you apply as a new registrant. source
  • A registration not renewed before September 1 of the renewal year lapses for good: it can't be renewed, and you have to apply again. source

Taking the PTCE anyway? Here's what's on it

The PTCB's certification exam, the PTCE, has 90 questions (80 scored) in 1 hour 50 minutes and costs $129. On the 2026 content outline, Medications is 35% of the exam, Patient Safety and Quality Assurance 23.75%, Order Entry and Processing 22.5%, and Federal Requirements 18.75%.
