2026 · From official Indiana Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Indiana: license, training permit and costs

To work as a pharmacy technician in Indiana you need a pharmacy technician license from the Indiana Board of Pharmacy, which licenses through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. You qualify with a high school diploma or GED plus one of three routes: passing the PTCB or ExCPT exam, graduating from a board-approved training program, or completing a board-approved employer training program. If you haven't passed an exam or finished a program, you get a technician-in-training permit while you train; it lasts up to 12 months and can't be renewed. National certification isn't required, because a board-approved training program also qualifies you. The law sets the minimum age at 18, though the board can waive it for good cause with a letter from your managing pharmacist, and every applicant completes a fingerprint background check after applying. The application costs $25, and the license expires on June 30 of even-numbered years and renews for $25, with no continuing education in Indiana's technician law or the board's renewal instructions. These requirements come from the board's licensing page, Indiana Code 25-26-19 and the Professional Licensing Agency's background check page, checked November 1, 2026.

Technician licenses expire on June 30 of even-numbered years (the next is June 30, 2028) and renew for $25; the agency emails or mails a renewal notice about 90 days before. Indiana's technician law and the board's renewal instructions set no continuing education for technicians; the only technician CE in the law is for technicians working at a remote dispensing facility without a pharmacist on site. A license expired up to 3 years renews for $25. After 3 years you reinstate for $50 with a current PTCB or ExCPT certificate, a future employer's statement that it will put you through its approved training program, or proof of an active technician license and recent work in another state. Technician-in-training permits can't be renewed. source
