2026 · From official Tennessee Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Tennessee: registration, certified technician status and costs
To work as a pharmacy technician in Tennessee you need a pharmacy technician registration from the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy. There is no trainee registration, but a new hire the employer classifies as probationary may do technician tasks for up to 90 days from the start date, and students on rotations in a formal technician training program are exempt. National certification isn't required; technicians certified through a program the board recognizes count as certified pharmacy technicians, who may also take spoken prescriptions, transfer prescriptions and, after training, give vaccines and point-of-care tests. The board's rules set no minimum age, education or training hours, but you need a TBI and FBI fingerprint background check and an affidavit, signed by you and your employer, that you've read Tennessee's technician rule and pharmacy laws. You apply online through the Department of Health's LARS system, and the board's rules set a $55 registration fee plus a $10 peer assistance fee; fingerprinting costs $37.15. The registration renews every two years for $75 plus the $10 fee, and the board's rules set no continuing education for registered technicians, except 2 hours for certified technicians who give vaccines or do point-of-care tests. These requirements come from the board's pages and its rules in chapters 1140-01 and 1140-02, checked November 1, 2026.

Renewal and continuing education
The registration renews every two years, on a cycle that starts in the month you were first registered, and the renewal is due by the last day of the month it expires. You can renew online through LARS up to 60 days before it expires, or by mail. Renewal costs $75 plus the $10 peer assistance fee. The board's continuing education rules (chapter 1140-05) cover pharmacists, and the technician rule sets no CE for registered technicians; certified technicians who give vaccines need 2 hours of immunization CE, and those who do point-of-care tests 2 hours of testing CE, each renewal cycle. A late renewal adds a $10 penalty for each month or part of a month, and after six months the board may refuse to renew. Technicians on active duty in the uniformed services don't pay renewal fees while serving. source
Mistakes people make in Tennessee
- Passing the PTCB or ExCPT exam doesn't replace the board registration. The board's FAQ says nationally certified technicians still have to register. source
- Your PTCB or ExCPT certification and your Tennessee registration are renewed separately. Renewing one doesn't renew the other. source
- The probationary exemption ends 90 days after your first day of employment. Apply early enough to be registered by then. source
Tennessee doesn't require the PTCE, but certified technicians can do more: here's what's on it
