2026 · From official NYSED Office of the Professions sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in New York: the registered pharmacy technician license

To work as a registered pharmacy technician in New York you need a license from the New York State Education Department, under Article 137-A of the Education Law. You must be at least 18 when you apply, have a high school diploma or its equivalent, be of good moral character and hold certification from PTCB or NHA, so national certification is required before you apply. New York has no trainee registration and no grandparenting route, and fingerprinting isn't listed among the requirements, though the application asks about criminal convictions. The law sets no training program; the pharmacy that employs you must make sure you are trained and competent before you assist with compounding, preparing, labeling or dispensing. Staff without the license can still do support tasks that don't need one, such as typing labels and counting doses, but not compounding. You apply online with Form 1 and pay $175, which covers the $75 license fee and your first three-year registration; after that the registration costs $100 every three years, and neither the law nor the regulations set continuing education for registered pharmacy technicians. These requirements come from the Office of the Professions' pages, Education Law Article 137-A and Part 63 of the Commissioner's Regulations, checked November 1, 2026.

Renewal and continuing education

The license is for life, but you must hold a current registration to practice. A registration lasts three years and costs $100; your first renewal is prorated so later renewals fall in your birth month, and you renew online. Neither Article 137-A nor Part 63 sets continuing education for registered pharmacy technicians, and you don't need to keep your national certification for renewal, though the Department says keeping it is one way to show you stay competent. If your registration has lapsed for more than four months, you file a Delayed Registration Application. source
