2026 · From official Colorado State Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Colorado: certification, provisional certification and renewal
To work as a pharmacy technician in Colorado you need a pharmacy technician certification from the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy, required since March 30, 2020. For the full certification you must hold, and keep, a national certification from a board-approved organization, and the board lists the PTCB and NHA. If you aren't nationally certified yet, the board can issue a provisional certification, valid for up to 18 months and not renewable, while you pass the PTCE or ExCPT. The statute and the board's rules set no minimum age, diploma or training hours, but you must read and write English and show you had a criminal history check through your employer, a training course or your certifying organization. You apply online through the Division of Professions and Occupations' Online Services, and the Division sets the fee, which isn't listed on the board's current pages. To renew, you attest that your national certification is still active, which includes its continuing education, so Colorado adds no CE hours of its own, and there's a 60-day grace period with a delinquency fee. These requirements come from the board's pages, its rules (3 CCR 719-1) and Colorado Revised Statutes title 12, checked November 1, 2026.
Colorado requirements at a glance
- Credential
- Pharmacy technician certification from the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy (C.R.S. 12-280-115.5). Since March 30, 2020, nobody may practice as a pharmacy technician without a certification or a provisional certification. source
- National certification
- Required for the full certification: you must hold, and keep in good standing, a certification from a board-approved certifying organization. The board lists the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). source
- Provisional certification
- If you aren't nationally certified yet, the board can issue a provisional certification once you meet the other requirements. It lasts up to 18 months and can't be renewed; the board's rule allows one fee-waived, 9-month hardship extension, requested in writing at least 60 days before it expires. source
- Background check
- Proof that you submitted to a criminal history check as a condition of your current job at a pharmacy, of a course of study with a certifying organization, or of getting your national certification. The board's rule doesn't ask for a separate state fingerprint check. source
- Minimum age, education and training
- None set in the statute or the board's rules. Every applicant for a license or certification must be able to read and write English. source
- Ratio
- A pharmacist may supervise up to 6 technicians and interns, no more than 2 of them interns (8 in a central fill pharmacy). When 3 or more technicians are on duty, most of them must hold the full certification, and the rest a provisional one. source
- Final product verification
- Since August 12, 2026 (HB 26-1336), a supervising pharmacist may delegate final product verification of drugs that aren't controlled substances to a technician, such as checking another technician's work or using bar code checks. The board must adopt rules on training and excluded drugs by December 31, 2026. source

- Upload your national certificate (for the full certification), answer the screening questions, complete the Healthcare Professions Profile and pay the non-refundable fee. An incomplete application expires one year after you submit it. source
- On a provisional certification, pass the PTCE or ExCPT and apply for the full certification before your 18 months are up. If you need more time, ask the board for a hardship extension at least 60 days before it expires. source
What it costs in Colorado
| Fee | Amount | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Certification or provisional certification application | Set by the Division; not listed on the board's current pages | Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations source |
| PTCE certification exam | $129 | PTCB source |
| Renewal | Set by the Division; shown in Online Services when renewal opens | Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations source |

Colorado's Division of Professions and Occupations sets these fees (C.R.S. 12-20-105), and no current amounts were published on the board's pages on November 1, 2026, so check the amount the online application shows. Application fees are non-refundable and can't be transferred.
Renewal and continuing education
Your certification renews on a schedule set by the Division of Professions and Occupations, and renewal opens in Online Services about 4 to 6 weeks before your expiration date. Colorado sets no CE hours of its own: to renew, you attest that you keep an active certification with the PTCB or NHA, which includes meeting that organization's continuing education and renewal requirements, and the board may audit up to 5% of certified technicians living in Colorado each year. Keep your CE records for at least 4 years. If your national certification lapses, your Colorado certification becomes inactive, and working while inactive is grounds for revocation. You have a 60-day grace period after expiration to renew with a delinquency fee; after that the certification has expired and you must reinstate it, and the board's licensing guide says reinstatement takes 24 hours of ACPE-approved CE in the past two years, plus 1 more hour for each month it was expired if that's 2 years or more. Provisional certifications can't be renewed. source
Mistakes people make in Colorado
- A PTCB or NHA certificate alone doesn't let you work in Colorado. You need the board's certification or provisional certification first; practicing without one is unlawful and can bring a civil fine of $1,000 to $10,000 per violation. source
- The provisional certification can't be renewed. If you aren't nationally certified within 18 months (or an approved extension), it expires and you can't work as a technician until you're fully certified. source
- Letting your PTCB or NHA certification lapse makes your Colorado certification inactive, and working while inactive is grounds for revocation. source

Up to 18 months, and it can't be renewed. The board can grant one fee-waived, 9-month hardship extension if you send a written request at least 60 days before it expires.
Do you need fingerprints to be a pharmacy technician in Colorado?
Not a separate state check. The board's rule asks for proof that you had a criminal history check for your current employer, a course with a certifying organization, or your national certification.
Do Colorado pharmacy technicians need continuing education?
Colorado sets no CE hours of its own. To renew, you must keep your PTCB or NHA certification active, which means meeting that organization's CE requirements, and keep your records for 4 years.
How many pharmacy technicians can a pharmacist supervise in Colorado?
Up to 6 technicians and interns combined, no more than 2 of them interns. If 3 or more technicians are on duty, most of them must hold the full certification.
