2026 · From official Oregon Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Oregon: license types, application and costs
To work as a pharmacy technician in Oregon you need a license from the Oregon Board of Pharmacy, either a Pharmacy Technician license or a Certified Oregon Pharmacy Technician (COPT) license. There is no separate trainee registration: if you haven't passed a national certification exam you apply for the Pharmacy Technician license, and if you've passed the PTCB's PTCE or NHA's ExCPT you apply for the COPT license. National certification isn't required to work, and the Pharmacy Technician license renews every two years just like the COPT license. Both licenses require you to be at least 18 with high school or the equivalent and to pass a national fingerprint-based background check; no training program is needed to apply, but the rules require you to be trained in each task before you perform it. You apply online through the board's eGov system and pay a $140 license fee, plus $48 for the background check and $12.50 to Fieldprint. Both licenses expire on June 30 of even-numbered years and renew for $140, with 20 hours of continuing education every two years, including 2 hours each of pharmacy law, patient safety and cultural competency. These requirements come from the board's license pages and its rules in Oregon Administrative Rules chapter 855, checked November 1, 2026.

Before you renew you must complete 20 hours of continuing pharmacy education: 2 hours of pharmacy law, 2 hours of patient safety or medication error prevention, 2 hours of cultural competency and 14 hours in other pharmacy subjects; extra hours in the required topics count toward the 14. A renewal submitted after the license expires adds a $20 late fee, and you can't work as a technician once your license has expired unless you renew it or receive a COPT license. source
