2026 · From official Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Pennsylvania: registration, training and costs
To work as a pharmacy technician in Pennsylvania you need a pharmacy technician registration from the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy, which the board says technicians had to hold by June 28, 2026 to keep practicing. If you haven't finished training yet, you can register as a pharmacy technician trainee from age 16 ($15); it's issued only once and ends after two years or when you register as a technician. For the technician registration you must be at least 17, have a high school diploma or equivalent and complete a board-approved training program, which can be run by your pharmacy employer. There is no exam requirement, so PTCB or ExCPT certification isn't required. Both registrations need a criminal history record check and 3 hours of approved child abuse recognition and reporting training, and you apply online through PALS. The technician registration costs $30 ($15 if you convert from a trainee registration) and renews every two years in odd-numbered years for $70, with 2 hours of child abuse recognition and reporting continuing education. These requirements come from the board's pages, its rules in 49 Pa. Code chapter 27 and section 3.3 of the Pharmacy Act, checked November 1, 2026.

- The grandfather route is closed. Experienced technicians without a diploma or training program could register only if they applied by June 28, 2026. source
- You get only one trainee registration, and it ends two years after it's issued, so finish your training and register as a technician within that time. source
