2026 · From official Kentucky Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Kentucky: registration, certified technician status and costs
To work as a pharmacy technician in Kentucky you need a pharmacy technician registration from the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy, and you must be at least 16. There is no trainee registration, but once your application is filed you may assist in the pharmacy until 30 days have passed since you started there, and the board's rule says the application must go in within those 30 days. National certification isn't required: if you pass the PTCB's PTCE or NHA's ExCPT and keep the certificate current, the board recognizes you as a certified pharmacy technician, who can work under general supervision and be given more tasks. The statute and the board's technician regulation set no education, training or fingerprint requirement, and every applicant needs an NABP e-Profile ID. You apply online through the board's Licensure Gateway and pay $25. The registration expires every March 31 and renews for $25, with no continuing education required unless you give vaccines, which takes 2 hours of immunization CE each registration period. These requirements come from the board's pages and the board's Kentucky Pharmacy Lawbook (KRS 315.135 to 315.138 and 201 KAR 2:045), checked November 1, 2026.
