2026 · From official North Carolina Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in North Carolina: registration, training and costs
To work as a pharmacy technician in North Carolina you need a pharmacy technician registration from the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, renewed every year. There's no trainee registration: a pharmacist-manager can hire you if you have a high school diploma or equivalent, or are enrolled in a program that awards one, and must give you a training program that you finish within 180 days of your start date. The law gives you 30 days after that training to register, but the board says that as a practical matter you should register within 21 days of starting, the deadline for your pharmacist-manager to report you. National certification isn't required; if you hold a current PTCB or NHA ExCPT certification you register as a certified pharmacy technician, the certification counts in place of the employer training, and you must be registered before you start work. The statute and the board's rules set no minimum age and no fingerprint check for registration, and you apply on the board's online Licensure Gateway with an NABP e-Profile number and a $30 fee. Registrations expire every December 31 and renew for $30, and the board requires no continuing education except 2 hours of immunization CE a year for technicians who give vaccines. These requirements come from North Carolina General Statute 90-85.15A, the board's rules in 21 NCAC 46 and the board's technician, fee and renewal pages, checked November 1, 2026.
North Carolina requirements at a glance
- Credential
- Pharmacy technician registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, renewed every year. There are two kinds: noncertified and certified pharmacy technicians. Students at an approved school of pharmacy register as interns instead, and technician students in a pharmacy only for their program's training don't register; a student who is employed by the pharmacy does. source
- National certification
- Not required. The board recognizes two certifications, PTCB and NHA's ExCPT. A certified technician registers with proof of current certification, can register without a pharmacy job, and is treated as having completed the employer training. source
- Education (noncertified technicians)
- High school diploma or equivalent, or currently enrolled in a program that awards one. source
- Minimum age
- Not set in G.S. 90-85.15A or the board's rules (21 NCAC 46). source
- Training
- A training program from your pharmacist-manager covering pharmacy terminology, pharmacy calculations, dispensing systems and labeling, pharmacy laws and regulations, record keeping and documentation, and handling and storage of medications, completed within 180 days of your start date. The content can differ by type of job, and the statute sets no minimum hours. source
- Background check
- No fingerprint requirement for registration in G.S. 90-85.15A or on the board's technician page. The board can refuse, suspend or revoke a registration for false statements on the application, a felony involving drugs, drug use that makes you unfit, or negligence. source
- Supervision
- A pharmacist may supervise more than 2 technicians only with the board's written approval, and the extra technicians must be certified. In health care facility pharmacies the rules pre-approve extra "Validating Technicians". source
- Vaccines
- Under an immunizing pharmacist, a registered technician may give ACIP-recommended vaccines to adults and flu and COVID vaccines to patients 7 and older, after an ACPE-approved practical training program with hands-on injection technique, with a current CPR certificate, after telling the board in the Licensure Gateway, and with 2 hours of ACPE-approved immunization CE every year. source

Renewal and continuing education
Registrations expire on December 31 every year. The renewal period runs from November 1 to December 31 (the 2027 renewal opened November 1, 2026), and you renew in the Licensure Gateway for $30. The board requires no continuing education to renew a technician registration. Certified technicians show proof of current certification each year and keep up the CE that PTCB or ExCPT requires, and technicians who give vaccines need 2 hours of ACPE-approved immunization CE each year. Noncertified technicians must be working as a technician in a pharmacy to renew; certified technicians can renew without a job. The board allows renewal without penalty until March 1, but working as a technician more than 60 days after expiration without renewing is unlawful, and a registration not renewed by March 1 lapses and needs the $60 reinstatement application in the Gateway. source
