2026 · From official New Jersey Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in New Jersey: registration, the 180-day applicant period and costs
To work as a pharmacy technician in New Jersey you need a pharmacy technician registration from the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy. If you're hired before you're registered, you work as a "pharmacy technician applicant": you must file your application within your first 10 days on the job, and you can be an applicant only once, for up to 180 days. National certification isn't required, though only certified technicians (or ones who passed a board-approved program) can work while a pharmacist supervises more than two technicians. You must be 18, have a high school diploma or its equivalent, certify that you're proficient in written and spoken English, show good moral character, and submit fingerprints for a criminal history background check. The board's rules set no required course or training hours for registration. The board's fee rule charges $50 to apply and a $70 initial registration fee ($35 if you register in the second year of the two-year cycle), and the registration renews every two years for $70, with no continuing education requirement in the technician renewal rule. These requirements come from the board's pages and its rules at N.J.A.C. 13:39 as published in the New Jersey Register, checked November 1, 2026.
