2026 · From official California State Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked October 31, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in California: license routes, application and costs

To work as a pharmacy technician in California you need a pharmacy technician license from the California State Board of Pharmacy. You qualify with a high school diploma or GED plus any one of four routes: an associate degree in pharmacy technology, a board-specified training course (an ASHP-accredited program, a military program, or a course of at least 240 hours), graduation from a school of pharmacy, or national certification from PTCB or NHA. So PTCB certification isn't required for the license, but since January 1, 2026 it is required for the new expanded technician duties, such as giving flu and COVID vaccines. The application is on paper: a $120 fee, a Live Scan fingerprint check and a National Practitioner Data Bank self-query, mailed to the board. The license renews every two years for $150, with 1 hour of cultural competency continuing education each time. Since January 1, 2026, one pharmacist can supervise up to three technicians. These requirements come from the board's pages and forms and the Business and Professions Code, checked October 31, 2026.

Renewal and continuing education

The license renews every two years, online through the Department of Consumer Affairs or by mail. Each renewal needs 1 hour of cultural competency continuing education that meets all four requirements in Business and Professions Code section 4231(a); there are no exemptions or extensions, and without it the board issues an inactive license. Keep your certificates for 4 years. A license not renewed within 90 days after it expires is cancelled, and you have to apply again. source
