2026 · From official Ohio Board of Pharmacy sources · Checked November 1, 2026 How to become a pharmacy technician in Ohio: trainee, registered and certified registrations

To work as a pharmacy technician in Ohio you need an Active registration from the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician trainee, a registered pharmacy technician or a certified pharmacy technician, and you can't start technician duties while your application is still pending. If you haven't finished an approved training program you register as a trainee ($40), which needs you to be at least 17 with a high school diploma or GED (or enrolled in a board-approved high school career-technical program); the registration lasts 18 months, can't be renewed and can be reinstated only once. Once trained, through an employer-based program with 300 hours of supervised practice, an ASHP/ACPE-accredited program or another approved route, you become a registered pharmacy technician ($65) without national certification, or a certified pharmacy technician ($65) if you also hold current PTCB or NHA certification, which allows a few extra duties. Registered and certified technicians must be 18 and have a high school diploma or equivalent, and applicants schooled outside the US must also show English proficiency. Every new application needs BCI and FBI fingerprint checks taken within the last 24 months, and you apply and pay online in eLicense Ohio. Registered and certified registrations renew every two years for $65 (registered technicians by March 31 and certified technicians by September 30 of even-numbered years); registered technicians need 10 hours of CE, including 2 of law and 2 of patient safety, while certified technicians keep their national certification current instead. These requirements come from the Ohio Revised Code (sections 4729.90 to 4729.921), the board's rules in chapter 4729:3 and the board's FAQ and guidance documents, checked November 1, 2026.

Ohio requirements at a glance

Credential
Registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy, in one of three types: pharmacy technician trainee, registered pharmacy technician or certified pharmacy technician. You need an Active registration before you do any technician duties; an application that is Pending, Submitted or In Review isn't enough. source
Trainee registration
For people enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, an approved training program. Valid for 18 months and not renewable; a trainee who runs out of time can apply for reinstatement, and the board grants only one. source
National certification
Not required for the trainee or registered pharmacy technician registration. Required, and must be kept current, for the certified pharmacy technician registration: PTCB (CPhT) or NHA (ExCPT). source
Education
High school diploma, GED or an equivalent foreign diploma. Registered technicians employed continuously as technicians since before April 8, 2009 are exempt. Registered and certified applicants schooled outside the US must also show English proficiency, for example with the TOEFL iBT, a US associate degree or an attestation from the pharmacy where they work. source
Minimum age
18 for registered and certified technicians. 17 for trainees who have a diploma or GED, or who are 17 or 18 and enrolled in a board-approved high school career-technical program. The board's trainee web page still says 18 unless you're in a high school program, but its FAQ (updated August 4, 2026) and rule 4729:3-2-01 say 17. source
Training
An approved program: an employer-based program (didactic training, a 90-question exam passed at 75% or more, and 300 hours of practice under a pharmacist; current PTCB or NHA certification waives the didactic part), an ASHP/ACPE-accredited or candidate program, an Armed Forces, Indian Health Service or VA program, a board-approved Ohio public high school program, a PharmD within the last 5 years, or a year as a pharmacist or intern in another state. Technicians registered in another state who worked at least a year in the last 5 can apply by reciprocity instead. source
Fingerprints
BCI and FBI criminal records checks from fingerprints, for every new and reinstatement application, trainees included. Prints must be taken at an Ohio WebCheck (BCI & FBI) provider within 24 months before the board receives your application; ink cards are accepted only from out-of-state applicants or in a few other cases. Renewals don't need a new check. source
Certified technician duties
Only certified technicians may take new verbal prescriptions for non-controlled drugs, transfer non-controlled prescriptions, call prescribers for clarifications and do diagnostic lab testing. Registered and certified technicians, but not trainees, may give immunizations after the training the board's rules require. source

How to get your registration in Ohio, step by step

  1. Pick your registration: trainee if you haven't completed an approved training program, registered once you have, or certified if you also hold current PTCB or NHA certification. source
  2. Get fingerprinted at an Ohio WebCheck (BCI & FBI) provider before you apply: ask for both checks, give the reason (ORC 4729.92 for trainees, 4729.90 for registered or certified) and have the results sent directly to the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. Out-of-state applicants can use the FastFingerprints pilot or mail BCI and FBI ink cards to Ohio BCI with $46. source
  3. Create an eLicense Ohio account and submit the application with proof of age, your diploma or GED and your training documents (plus your certification for the certified registration). Pay online by Visa, MasterCard or Discover: $40 for a trainee or $65 for a registered or certified technician, plus the transaction fee. eLicense Ohio source
  4. If the board emails you for more information, supply it within 30 days, or the application may be treated as abandoned. source
  5. Wait for the Certificate of Issuance email and an Active status, normally 10 to 15 business days after you submit. You can't do technician duties while the application is Pending, Submitted or In Review. source
  6. As a trainee, finish an approved training program within your 18 months, then apply in eLicense Ohio for the registered or certified registration. You don't have to wait for the trainee registration to expire. eLicense Ohio source

Fees in effect since September 30, 2025; the board's renewal rule still prints the old $50 renewal fee, but the statute and the board charge $65. eLicense Ohio adds a nonrefundable transaction fee to each application ($3.50 on the 2026 certified renewal), registration and renewal fees are waived for veterans with documentation, and the PTCE (needed only for the certified registration) costs $129 at PTCB.

Renewal and continuing education

Registered and certified registrations renew every two years in eLicense Ohio for $65 plus the transaction fee: registered technicians by March 31 and certified technicians by September 30 of even-numbered years, so the next deadlines are in 2028. Registered technicians need 10 contact hours of continuing education in the 24 months before the deadline, including 2 hours of pharmacy law and 2 hours of patient or medication safety, from ACPE-accredited providers or approved law programs (up to a third can come from approved volunteer health care work), tracked in NABP CPE Monitor; you need none if your first registration was issued within six months of the deadline. Certified technicians don't need those 10 hours: they keep their PTCB or NHA certification current and upload it when they renew, and the board restricts the registration of anyone whose certification lapses. A registered technician can switch to the certified registration at no cost during the renewal period. Up to 90 days late you can still renew with a $50 late fee; after that the registration can't be renewed and you apply for reinstatement. Trainee registrations last 18 months, can't be renewed and need no CE. source

Mistakes people make in Ohio

  • A submitted application doesn't let you start work. Trainees included, you can't do technician duties until your registration shows Active. source
  • Passing the PTCE or ExCPT doesn't replace training. The board says it can't process a registration unless you've completed one of its approved training programs; technicians registered in another state can use reciprocity instead. source
  • The trainee registration lasts 18 months and can't be renewed, and the board grants only one reinstatement if you need more time to finish training. source

How much does it cost to become a pharmacy technician in Ohio?

$40 for a trainee registration and $65 for a registered or certified technician registration, plus the eLicense transaction fee and the fingerprint fee, which the board says is generally $50 to $80. Renewal is $65 every two years.

How old do you have to be to be a pharmacy technician in Ohio?

18 for registered and certified technicians. You can register as a trainee at 17 if you have a high school diploma or GED, or if you're enrolled in a board-approved high school career-technical program.

How many CE hours do Ohio pharmacy technicians need?

Both need approved training and fingerprint background checks, and both cost $65.
